Report for workshop on 17th April, 2012
Venue: SMK Sri Hartamas
Number of attendance: 48
Number of badges sold: 55
Taking a class for school kids of the age group of 14 was an amazing experience with its own challenges and limitations. The kids were quite enthusiastic and very participative. They showed a lot of interest in the games and activities. The videos shown helped in breaking the monotony and drew their attention to us. The two other volunteers from AIESEC UM, Allen and Puteri, were very helpful and the group effort made us complete the task successfully. The support from the teacher’s side was very over whelming and helped in better performance and discipline among the kids. The children gave a very nice feedback which was and still is very motivating for me.
The greatest challenge was holding the attention of these young energetic children. Considering Malaysia to be a majority of Muslim community, it became a little hard for me to talk about sexual acts like oral sex and to show them condom demonstration. I managed to sell 55 badges and collect 111 RM J
On the analysis of the feedback form (which only 32 students had filled), the results state that)
25 students were very happy and liked the session, 5 students felt it was average and 2 students were not very happy with it. 28 students felt that they learnt a lot about HIV/AIDS and 4 students felt that their learning was average. 18 students felt that the games were a lot of fun and 12 students felt they were average and only 2 students were not quite happy with it. 27 students felt that the presenter (Prithvi, myself) knew a lot about HIV/AIDS, while only 5 people felt that I knew average information. 21 students felt that I responded very well to their questions while 11 students felt that I answered fine and only 1 student was not satisfied. Finally, 12 students stated that they would like to attend another session, while 18 of them were not very sure and only 1 student disapproved of it.
The favourite things for the students in the session were the videos, activities, knowledge (oral sex), the presenter (and presentation) and they also enjoyed the Q and A session a lot.
The complaints from the students side was that the audio clarity of the videos were not so good (because of the technical problems from the schools side), the disturbance by other students and finally a very few disliked the description of oral sex (due to religious reasons).
Some of the suggestions received were about better audio quality, extra facts and information, talking more fun stuff, playing more games, silence among other students, service of food and more postcards and also to have more lively presentations.
